I bought the new TerraMaster F4-425 NAS recently to use for media and app storage. It comes with TOS7 pre-installed but TrueNAS seemed like a better option for my needs.

There’s a guide to installing TrueNAS on TerraMaster here but it’s a bit out-of-date for the F4-425.

  1. Download the TrueNAS Community Edition iso from here.
  2. Install balenaEtcher and flash the iso to a removable USB drive.
  3. Install an OS drive in your NAS. TrueNAS will take up the whole of this drive but it doesn’t need much space so I bought a 2nd hand 128GB M.2 NVME from eBay for £10 and used that.
  4. Plug a monitor and keyboard in to the NAS along with the USB install drive.
  5. Turn on the NAS. It should display the TerraMaster logo and then offer you a choice of which drive you want to boot from (may need to press F12 on the logo if not). Choose the USB drive.
  6. Follow the TrueNAS install instructions to install on your chosen OS drive.
  7. Reboot and press F12 on startup at the TerraMaster logo to boot into the BIOS. Go to the boot order tab and change your OS drive to be highest priority. If you don’t do this the internal TOS7 USB installer and TOS7 drive will have higher priority and it’ll boot from these.
